Most of these documents are served as “Ex-Parte” Orders/Petitions, where the Petitioner (Victim) has received temporary protection from the court, which lasts only until there is either a hearing before a properly sitting judge or the temporary order expires after 30 days. Within 30 days you have the right to appear before a judge to contest the allegations brought by the petitioner. These orders are VERY serious and the Judge can order a variety of remedies including Stay Away, Child Support, Forfeiture of Firearms, Travel Restrictions, Seizure/Payment of Funds, Contact Provisions, etc.
What to do? You benefit from having Professional Counsel during your hearing. There will not be a Public Defender and the Judge’s Ruling will likely last a minimum of One Year.
